A Study on Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Self-Efficacy, and Perceived Social Support of the Aged who got the Musculoskeletal Pain

Abstract
|
|
|
This study was designed to investigate the severity of musculoskeletal pain, levels of
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), self- efficacy and perceived social support ,
and their relationships among the aged whove suffering for the musculoskeletal pain.
The subjects consisted of 101 women, age over 65, registered at the Pain Clinics in
Taegu City .
Data was collected through interviews with questionnaires from August 24 to September
5, 1997, and analyzed by frequency, percent age, means , Pearson Correlation , t - test and ANOVA, using the SAS program.
The Results of this study were as follows.
First , the severity of musculoskeletal pain was 2.25/ 3, the mean score of IADL was
17.47/ 21, the mean score of s elf- efficacy was 55.96/ 100 and the mean score of perceived social support was 36.8/80.
Second, the scores of self efficay and perceived social support who’ s perceived severe
pain were higher than the scores who’ s perceived mild and endurable pain.
T hird, pain was significantly related to the Self- efficacy and perceived Social support ,
but wasn ’t related to the IADL.
Fourth, of the demographic characteristics of the subjects , age(F=12.21, p< .001),
educational level(F =3.03, p< .05) and participation in social activities (F=2.78, p< .01) were significantly related to the IADL scores . What was significantly related to the Self- efficacy was age(F =3.89, p< .05), educational level(F =3.92, p< .01) and participation in social activities (F=4.75, p< .001). Finally , the educational level(F=3.40, p< .01), living with aspouse(F=2.28, p< .05) and participation in social activities (F=2.12,< .05) were related to the Social support.
In conclusion, this study identified that self- efficacy and social support ar e useful
variables to care for the aged disabled who have musculoskeletal pain.
